OTTAWA - Nelson Mandela is being remembered in Canada for his wisdom, and his devotion to fighting injustice.

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair says Mandela was an intelligent man who cared for his people.

An honorary Canadian citizen, Mandela died today at the age of 95.

In a statement, Mulcair says the former South African leader was a source of inspiration for everyone, from the most impoverished to the world's most powerful.

Statements reacting to Mandela's death immediately streamed onto social media Thursday.

On Twitter, former Liberal leader Bob Rae called Mandela a truly great man who was simple and direct.
