KELOWNA - Staff at Walmart were threatened with a gun and a can of pepper spray during their attempt to stop a man who was tampering with merchandise this morning.

Shortly after 11 a.m. a man was spotted in the gardening section of the Banks Road store ripping open merchandise. When Security confronted him, he pulled out the pepper spray and said he also had a gun. The suspect then ran, dumping the merchandise in the process.

When RCMP arrived they cordoned off an area and attempted to locate the suspect. A police service dog was brought in and an RCMP helicopter circled the area but the suspect managed to evade police.

The man was last seen heading south on Enterprise Way. He's described as 5'7", with a heavy build and short brown hair. He was wearing a chain necklace, black tank top and white patterned shorts.

The man never did produce a gun during the event and no one was injured.

If anyone sees the suspect or has information on his whereabouts, contact Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
