The police watchdog has been called in to investigate as a suspect remains in critical condition after being tased by officers.
RCMP notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia of the incident that resulted in a 38-year-old man being taken to hospital on Monday, Oct. 28 in Sicamous.
Officers in Kelowna were called to reports of an erratic driver on Highway 97 near Lake Country just before 1:30 a.m. Monday. The vehicle was said to be straying from its lane and was later found by Armstrong RCMP officers.
Attempts to stop the vehicle failed with the driver allegedly missing a police officer by a small margin as he fled. The vehicle was later stopped near Sicamous but, before police could speak to the driver, he fled again.
When officers tried to arrest the man near Malakwa, 20 km northeast of Sicamous, he allegedly resisted. Police used a conducted energy weapon and handcuffed the man before he went into medical distress. He remains in hospital in critical condition.
While the IIO investigates whether police actions or inactions are linked to the man's injuries, the RCMP is conducting a criminal investigation including damage to two police vehicles.
