Man taken to Kamloops hospital after serious crash on Sun Peaks road

KAMLOOPS – Heavy snow may have contributed to the single vehicle crash that closed Heffley Louis Creek Road this morning.

A Honda Accord driven by a man from from Vancouver lost control in an 'S' curve east of the Knouff Lake turnoff at 9:25 a.m., today, Dec. 23, Staff Sgt. Doug Aird says in a release.

The man was taken to hospital with injuries. The two passengers — a woman and their toddler — were not injured.

Aird says after the crash, the car fell 35 to 40 feet down an embankment where it hit a culvert and stopped on the driver's side.

The female and the toddler were able to get up the embankment. The driver felt his back was injured and waited for emergency workers for help.

Emergency crews removed the roof of the car and brought him up the bank in a stretcher basket. He was then taken to Royal Inland Hospital with injures, Aird says.

Traffic was stopped in both directions and caused a three-kilometre back-up in each direction for about 45 minutes.

Aird says police would like to thank the off-duty paramedic and industrial first aid worker who stopped at the scene to assist.

"Roads were snow covered and slick at the time of the collision and police are advising folks coming or going to Sun Peaks today to take some extra time to ensure they are equipped for winter driving conditions," Aird says.
