A 62-year-old man was struck by a car while crossing the road in Kamloops last night.

The man entered the crosswalk of Fortune Dr. and Chestnut Ave with his 24-year-old son just after 6:30 p.m. Witnesses say a red 2002 Toyota Corolla was waiting on Chestnut for an opening in traffic before making a right turn onto Fortune Dr. and hitting the man. The younger man says cars were approaching and he didn't think the driver would make the turn. He managed to jump out of the way and avoid being hit while his father sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The driver, a 31-year-old Kamloops man says the cross walk was clear when he checked it just prior to looking to his left at the oncoming traffic as he initiated the turn. He states he never saw the man and his son until it was too late.

The driver stayed with the injured man until emergency crews arrived. Police questioned witnesses who also remained at the scene. Alcohol and speed have been ruled out as factors in the collision.
