A man was hunting in the forest near Summerland when he shot a bear and the bear fought back.

The man was with another person in the McNulty Forest Service Road area near Agur Lake around 8 a.m. on Thursday, according to a press release from the BC Conservation Officer Service.

The man shot and wounded a black bear, and then approached the bear thinking it was dead. As the man got close to the bear it popped up, knocked him down, and attacked him.

The hunter managed to fire another shot, but the bear got away and has not been located.

After the bear encounter the man went to the hospital and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Conservation officers received the report about the attack around 3:30 p.m. and went to where the encounter took place. After sweeping the area for several hours, officers still couldn’t find the bear and can’t confirm whether it is wounded in the area or dead.

Officers are looking for the bear but the service is advising people to avoid the area. The service is also advising people to be prepared for wildlife encounters by travelling in groups and carrying bear spray.
