Driver in hospital after car crashes into Vernon house

Vernon RCMP are investigating to figure out why a car sailed through a Vernon intersection and into a home last evening.

Officers were called to a car crash at the intersection of Palmer Road and Scott Road in Vernon at around 5:45 p.m. yesterday, June 23, according to an RCMP media release.

Witnesses told police a small silver car was westbound on Palmer Road when the driver left the road, crossed a lawn and hit a house in the 6500 block of Scott Road. The home's foundation received "substantial damage," RCMP said.

"With the structural damage done to the house, it was not safe for the vehicle to be removed," Vernon RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Tania Finn said in the release. "The homeowner is in the process of arranging an engineer to assess the damage and determine the best way to remove the vehicle from the basement foundation."

Firefighters and paramedics helped to extract the driver from the car.

The 57-year-old driver is currently in hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said, and the investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
