Man drowns in Okanagan Lake in West Kelowna

The West Kelowna RCMP and B.C. Coroners Service are investigating after a 65-year-old man drowned in Okanagan Lake yesterday.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a drowning in West Kelowna near the 2000 block of Boucherie Road on Okanagan Lake July 9, just before 1:45 p.m., according an RCMP news release.

Police learned a 65-year-old man who was swimming failed to resurface and witnesses on scene were able to locate and pull the man out of the water within minutes. They began giving him CPR before emergency crews arrived.

Emergency crews continued to conduct live saving efforts, but the man died.

“Despite the best efforts of everyone involved and the heroic efforts of witnesses, the man passed away,” said Cst. Solana Paré, in the release. “RCMP Victim Services are providing support to the witnesses, friends and family of the victim. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of the victim during this difficult time.”

The B.C. Coroners Service is investigating the cause of the death. Neither organization will be releasing or confirming the man's identity and no additional information will be released at this time.
