KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP responded to a snowmobile incident at Sun Peaks today.

The rider, a 28-year-old Alberta man, was riding at the Western Canada Hillcross Tour when a snowmobile incident caused him to sustain serious injuries, a RCMP media release says.

He was airlifted off the mountain to the resort's medical centre where he passed away.

Sun Peaks sent out a statement that said the accident occurred on the course during their Snowmobile Hill Climb, today April 20. The release further said that the incident involved a snowmobile and a driver.

The ski patrol was on scene to provide medical assistance.

"Our hearts go out to the family, friends, event organizers, and all those involved," the Sun Peaks statement says, "This is a tragic incident and we will do everything we can to assist during this difficult time."

The event that was meant to go all weekend has been cancelled.
