VERNON - It was a scene right out of a children's story: A bear nonchalantly snacking on chestnuts at a picnic table. No, it’s not photoshopped.
Rick Zoethout, with Cidel Moving and Storage, captured the photo while loading items into a home. He says one of his employees heard a rustling in the bush and, thinking it was a dog, stuck his hand over and said ‘Come here puppy.’ Instead, a bear wandered into view and moseyed around the yard until something caught his attention.
“He saw chestnuts sitting on a picnic table and helped himself,” Zoethout says.
The chestnuts were in a muffin tin, likely having been played with earlier by some kids. The cinnamon-hued black bear sat for about five minutes, then headed down to Coldstream Creek, which borders the Tebo Drive property, and disappeared.
“He was definitely not threatening,” Zoethout says. “He was pretty calm and just going about his way. It was pretty cute.”
Nonetheless, maybe it's a good thing the bear didn't stick around for dessert.
