Man broke into Kelowna construction site, climbed crane

An area of Downtown Kelowna was cordoned off for more than four hours last night after a man broke into a construction site and climbed a crane.

Kelowna RCMP say the man was 20 storeys up. The incident started before 8 p.m. and he "was safely removed" at 11:45 p.m., RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Laura Pollock said.

Police cordoned off the area on Leon Avenue and Water Street as Emergency Response Team, Kelowna Fire Department and a crisis negotiation team attended. The unidentified man was later arrested for breaking and entering and mischief and was held in custody overnight.

“The RCMP would like to thank the public for staying out of the area at the time of the event. This allowed our officers and other emergency personnel to focus on the safety of the suspect resulting in a successful resolution,” Pollock said.
