'Making art accessible': New sculptures unveiled in Penticton

'Intersect' by Karl Mattson from Rolla, B.C.

The public art work that decorates Penticton’s downtown and northern waterfront each year have been freshened up.

City crews have been installing the new sculptures today, May 19, and yesterday.

“Art has the power to transform spaces, inspire creativity and foster a sense of community. They serve as landmarks, gathering points and inspiration for residents and visitors alike,” Mayor Julius Bloomfield said in a media release.

“The Public Sculpture Exhibition program is a key component in making art accessible. I encourage everyone to take the time to explore these new installations and celebrate the power of art to bring people together.”

The tradition of displaying public sculptures along Lakeshore Drive, Main Street and the Front Street roundabout began in 2016.

The City earmarked $40,000 for the public art and the Penticton Public Sculpture Exhibition receives the majority it.

Sculptors will be speaking with the public tomorrow during the Artist Talk and Forum at the Penticton Art Gallery from 2 to 3 p.m.
