KELOWNA - The death of a Kelowna woman who was the girlfriend of Red Scorpion gangster Jamie Bacon was caused by an overdose of carfentanil, the B.C. Coroner Service has determined.

Madison Zoe Fine, 25, was found unresponsive in a Richmond motel room December 1, 2017. No recuscitation was attempted as her death was obvious.

Coroner Debra Rees says in a report released May 18 that toxicology examination showed Fine died from an accidental overdose of the powerful opiod carfentanil, as identified by a Health Canada laboratory.

Investigation revealed Fine was a regular consumer of illicit substances and that the RCMP major crimes unit found “powder and a rolled bill” at the scene of Fine’s death.

Fine had survived another overdose only the night before her death and had been taken by ambulance to hospital where she was treated and later released.

No other hospitalizations or emergency room visits were recorded in the two years prior to Fine’s death, the coroner reports.

Her family told the coroner she had refused their offers of support and treatment when her "problematic substance abuse" became apparent.

Red Scorpion Jamie Bacon was most recently denied bail for his involvement in counselling the murder of an individual. Bacon earlier this year had the charges stayed over his involvement in the Surrey Six murders.
