Brazil protesters, police clash outside presidency office

June 01, 2016 - 3:04 PM

SAO PAULO - Militants of Brazil's Homeless Workers Movement protesting cuts in low-income housing projects have clashed with police in front of the presidency's regional office in Sao Paulo.

Movement leader Guilherme Boulos said Wednesday that the protesters will camp out in front of the building until the cuts are rescinded.

Movement members said about 1,000 protesters occupied the entrance hall of the building that houses the president's office in Brazil's largest city. Police said protesters were kept out of the building.

Authorities said demonstrators spray painted part of the building's facade and a nearby subway station. Police said at least six people were taken into custody and no one was hurt.
