Lawyer wants Kamloops bat assault trial moved to Kelowna

KAMLOOPS - A trial date still has not been set for a Kamloops man charged with assaulting a teenager with a baseball bat last year, but his lawyer is hoping to have a change in location.

Kristopher Teichrieb appeared by video in Kamloops Supreme Court today, Nov. 6, where lawyers pushed his appearance to next month in hopes of fixing a new date for his trial.

A colleague for Teichrieb's new lawyer, Jordan Watt, appeared by phone and told the court the reason for the delay in setting a new trial date was to "sort out" a venue-change application, which if granted would mean a Kelowna Supreme Court jury trial instead of Kamloops.

The defence is expected to complete the application before Teichrieb's appearance next month.

Teichrieb is charged with attempted murder and assault with a weapon in connection to an assault against 18-year-old Jessie Simpson in June 2016. Simpson has been in hospital since the incident.

Many of the circumstances of the alleged offence are bound by a court-ordered publication ban.

Teichrieb was expected to go to trial in Kamloops in January, but lawyers decided last month the three-week time period set aside for the proceedings would not be long enough.

None of the allegations against Teichrieb have been proven in court.
