KAMLOOPS - More parents than usual showed up for a drug forum put on by Kamloops RCMP last night.
School resource officer Const. Sofie Winkels says approximately 80 parents attended the presentation at Henry Grube Education Centre yesterday, March 6.
That turnout is a dramatic improvement from numbers the RCMP has seen at similar forums in the past.
Only about eight people showed up at similar presentations held in Brock and Sun Peaks.
Winkels says last night's two-hour forum gave parents the opportunity to find out how to discuss drug use with their children. Previously her biggest concern as a school resource officer was marijuana use among teens, a topic parents had questions about.
"Some parents were very brave and stood up," she says.
Winkels says representatives from the Phoenix Centre detox facility along with school counsellors offered parents resources and programs if they had concerns about their teenagers using drugs.
"From our side, we discussed what we’re seeing in the community (with) drug use in kids," Winkels says.
The RCMP will be holding another forum for parents next month to address cyber safety among teens. It will be held April 11 at the Henry Grube Education Centre.
