The Trail RCMP is investigating after a healthcare worker was allegedly assaulted earlier this month while on duty at the Trail hospital.

The Trail and Greater District RCMP received a report Jan. 2 at 11:53 a.m. that the 39-year-old Fruitvale woman was allegedly assaulted and injured by a 19-year-old Trail man while inside the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital.

The woman was working at the time of the incident, according to the RCMP.

Trail RCMP is sending a report to Crown Counsel detailing one count of assault contrary to Section 266 of the Criminal Code against the Trail man, according to the RCMP.

"Our frontline health care workers can experience violence during the course of their careers while performing their duties," said Sgt Mike Wicentowich, with the Trail RCMP, in a statement.

"Our officers often attend medical incident and work alongside health care works to help prevent and mitigate violence. Unfortunately, violence can happen suddenly and without warning. These workers continue to dedicate their lives to helping people despite facing these kinds of dangers."
