KELOWNA - Knox Mountain Drive is reopening after a dry, smoke-filled summer where the road to the top of Knox Mountain was closed for half the season.
With the risk of wildfire easing, the city believes it’s safe to open up the road again, urban forestry supervisor Andrew Hunsberger said in a press release. The road will reopen tomorrow morning, Sept. 15.
The road shut in early August as the fire danger rating mounted.
Under normal conditions, the 3.2 kilometre road to the top of Knox Mountain is open Monday to Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.
However the road is frequently closed during summer months due to fire risk as well as winter months when it becomes difficult to keep the narrow road clear of ice and snow.
There were two suspicious fires on Knox Mountain this summer, as well as a third fire started by young kids playing with a lighter.
