Transients start small grass fire in Kelowna overnight

The remains of a grass fire on Knox Mountain, July 24, 2018.

KELOWNA - Kelowna firefighters knocked down a grass fire at the base of Knox Mountain overnight believed to be caused by transients.

Platoon Capt. Kelly Stephens said they got numerous 911 calls at 12:25 a.m. about the fire on the hillside above Trench Place. No homes were in danger but it was roughly 100-feet-square when they arrived and moving quickly up the hill towards Royal View Drive. It grew to 200 feet by 300 feet before they extinguished it. Winds last night also forced the department to bring in extra crews.

A fire guard was put in place and they've been watching the fire overnight for hotspots.

"Fire is believed to have (been) started by transients," Stephens said in a release. "This fire is not deemed suspicious."
