Custom-built LEGO robots will do battle as the popular SumoBot event returns to Kelowna this week.

Young people between the ages of 9 and 14 will do battle with their robots, June 9, at the Central Okanagan school district’s Hollywood Road Education Service building.

STEAM/Learning Technology consultant Tobia Blaskovits said the last time the school district held the SumoBot event was in 2019, just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“To be successful in the SumoBot, teams must strategize, design, build and program a robot to autonomously seek out and either flip or push their competitor’s robot out of the ring,” according to a school district media release.

The students do the research and experiment with their creations through a trial and error process giving them a chance to problem solve while stoking their interest in science and technology.
