Darlene Richard has been searching high and low in Kelowna for a wooden box that would have very little value to anyone else but means the world to her

The box, which is about five inches long and three inches wide with a little padlock on the front, was stolen during a break-in to her house Oct. 9, along with some other belongings.

It may have looked like a jewelry box to the thief, but it actually contained the ashes of a cat she had since she was six years old and who lived with her for 19 years.

“I am hoping that when they opened the box, they realized it wasn’t of value and just threw it away,” she said.

“I have had his ashes for 27 years now and really want them back. He’s been with me for my whole life.”

To get the box back she’s scoured her neighbourhood. Her house is on Elliot Avenue, off Richter, and she’s lived there for three and a half years. Richard and her friends have also been going through alleys, garbage bins and parks, hoping to find it.  And they've spoken to the people in the area as well.

There’s been some unusual activity there in recent weeks, prompting the installation of surveillance cameras at a few houses, but she said those who spend the most time in the area have been helpful in her search.

“The downtown homeless community has been very supportive and sympathetic,” she said.
