A Kelowna roofing company has been fined $20,000 for working on a two-story house without the correct protection.
According to a recently published March 18 WorkSafeBC penalty notice, JV Roofing was working on the flat roof of the two-story building when WorkSafeBC inspected the site.
The inspectors found the company hadn't put a guardrail or fall protection roof anchors in place while its crew was on the roof. Also, ladders used at the jobsite weren't secured.
"The firm failed to ensure that, before being allowed into an area where a fall risk existed, workers were instructed in the fall protection system for the area, the penalty notice read. "The firm also failed to ensure that ladders used to access or egress from an upper landing were sufficiently secured."
WorkSafeBC also said the company failed to provide its workers with the information, instruction, training, and supervision necessary to ensure their health and safety.
The penalty notice said this is a "high risk" violation. No other details are given.
JV Roofing has been fined several times by the provincial agency in the last few years.

In 2022, WorkSafeBC issued a $2,500 fine because crews weren't wearing fall protection when working on a sloped two-story roof.
The following year, the firm was issued a $10,000 fine because it found workers were wearing fall protection harnesses, but they weren't connected.
Later that year, the company was issued a $20,000 fine because WorkSafeBC again found workers wearing fall protection harnesses that weren't connected.
