Police are investigating after a Remembrance Day ceremony in Kelowna this morning was interrupted by people opposing COVID-19 restrictions.
Shortly before the ceremony began, 75 to 100 demonstrators gathered at the city's cenotaph, Kelowna RCMP said in a release. Police attended to keep the peace.
A video posted by Global Okanagan shows a woman talking into a mic following a ceremony at Kelowna's cenotaph.
The crowd in City Park begins to boo as she talks about COVID-19 restrictions.
“Hey lady, take a look at these,” said one man, pointing to military medals on his chest. “This is not the... day.”
“It’s not about you,” someone else shouts while another man said “it’s not the right time, not the right place.”
Police are looking for video of the event, said Insp. Adam MacIntosh.
“Kelowna RCMP officers support a person or groups right to protest, but when they choose to willfully interrupt the assembly of citizens at a Remembrance Day ceremony; this is a step too far," he said. "The Kelowna RCMP will be fully investigating this event to determine what offence, criminal or otherwise may have been committed and if appropriate, the submission of charges or fines.”
The Kelowna RCMP and Royal Canadian Legion could not be immediately reached for comment.
