Kelowna Mounties step up driving enforcement

RCMP Traffic Services

It was a busy Tuesday for Kelowna Mounties who put on a traffic blitz and handed out dozens of tickets.

A joint operation on Jan. 28 between the Kelowna RCMP Municipal Traffic Section and RCMP Central Okanagan Traffic Services used both overt, and in some cases undercover techniques, in order to spot drivers allegedly handling their electronic devices while behind the wheel, or driving without their seatbelt fastened.

“Our traffic enforcement officers used several methods, including putting plainclothes spotters on busy streets in Kelowna,” Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Jocelyn Noseworthy said in a press release. “They would report their observations to a uniformed officer who would then be called in to conduct the traffic stop.”

In total, 57 violation tickets were issued to drivers, including 38 for using an electronic device while driving, and 15 for failure to wear a seatbelt.

The use of an electronic device while driving offence comes with a $368 fine and four demerit points, while the fail to wear a seatbelt offence will cost $167.
