Dustyn Baulkham, founder and executive producer of Kelowna-based Rebellious Unicorns Production Company Inc.has won an award for showing innovative thinking and leadership to both the LGBTQ+ and broader communities.

Canada’s LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce named Baulkham the 2020 Young LGBT+ Entrepreneur of the Year. He was presented the award during the chamber's virtual Black and White Gala on Thursday, Nov. 5.

The prestigious award is given to the person or persons who best exemplify: qualities of effective leadership and innovative thinking; potential for growth; and those who have shown commitment to both the LGBT2Q+ community and the broader community, according to Rebellious Unicorns in a press release.

“I know it’s been a challenging year for all of us,” said Baulkham, in the press release. “We need arts and entertainment to really keep us happy and keep our mental health in a good state.”

Founded in 2017, Rebellious Unicorns is a Kelowna-based events, broadcasting and media production company, dedicated to leading positive change in the Okanagan and curating inclusive events, experiences, and programming that unite us including Kelowna Pride events.

While the focus of Baulkham’s business has been producing in-person events for the LGBT2Q+ community and allies, the company launched an online streaming service called Unicorns.LIVE during the pandemic.

Unicorns.LIVE offers a platform for various types of entertainment by a diverse collection of creators. The service provides opportunities for participating artists and creators to be compensated for their work along with offering performance opportunities to those who have been adversely affected by the pandemic.

“It means a lot to be recognized for the award...thank you to the (chamber),” said Baulkham, in the press release.

Canada's LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce is the only chamber of commerce uniting and advocating for more than 28,000 LGBT+ owned and operated businesses in Canada. They generate more than $22 billion in economic activity and employ more than 435,000 Canadians.
