Two Kelowna residents were arrested in Penticton yesterday for allegedly peddling a date rape drug.

A 32-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man were in a vehicle in the 300 block of Riverside Drive in Penticton when the arrests occurred.

Officers seized more than a litre of GHB, also known as the "date rape drug". Police say the amount is equivalent to 200 doses.

Sergeant Rick Delleburr of the Penticton RCMP says it's not unusual to catch people dealing date rape drugs.

“But it is unusual for the quantity they had - one litre of it,” he says. GHB or gamma hydroxybutyrate has both euphoric and sedative effects on its users. Sgt. Delleburr says, “it used to be big at raves, but it's still out there.” He says the problem is most victims drugged with GHB cannot recall their experiences and don't bother reporting anything.

“People who get slipped the drug really have no recollection of what happened,” he says.

Both suspects were held in custody and released in a bail hearing, facing charges of trafficking and possession for the purpose of trafficking in GHB.
