Kelowna man and his dog help police catch a thief

KELOWNA – Kelowna RCMP have a wanted man in custody thanks to a protective dog and his alert owner.

A dog started barking when a trespasser was on his owner's property at about 6 a.m. yesterday, Jan. 26. The resident called police to report the suspicious activity, Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says in a media release.

O’Donaghey says the caller saw a man breaking into twelve parked vehicles in the Edgehill Court area. When police arrived, the suspect was inside a truck. The suspect fled and officers pursued him on foot.

"He was apprehended and taken into police custody, in the backyard of a nearby home," O'Donaghey says. "Officers seized a folding knife, loose change, various keys and gift cards among other items from the alleged thief."

O'Donaghey says the 31-year-old Kelowna man was wanted on several outstanding arrest warrants and was allegedly in breach of his probation order. He is scheduled to appear in court today.

“The RCMP wish to thank their complainant for their diligence in not only spotting this crime in progress, but also for immediately calling 911 and safely providing the necessary information which allowed our officers to capture a wanted man,” O’Donaghey says. “His actions likely prevented others in his neighbourhood from being victimized further and helped police recover property obtained by crime.”
