From fresh salsa to bar codes, the Thompson Okanagan is full of products and innovations that you may not know are based in the Interior.

Krista Mallory, manager of Central Okanagan Economic Development Commission, says “we have a ton of companies here that are thriving, hiring employees, that you may not know of that are operating here. It’s just that level of sophistication and opportunity is not apparent unless you go looking for it as it’s more invisible than, say, tourism and other industries.”

Fresh is Best Salsa Co.

This Kamloops salsa company was once featured in an episode of Big Bang Theory and has different salsa, chips, sauces and tacos that can be found in your local grocery stores. The company starting selling its salsa at the Kamloops Farmers’ Market and it took off. Fresh tortilla chips followed shortly afterwards, according to the company’s website.

This Kelowna-based company makes splash pads and water park equipment that can be seen in thousands of waterparks around the world.

”They’re a top-three supplier worldwide,” Mallory said. They began in the Okanagan and continue to operate here, Mallory said.

Anodyne Electronics Manufacturing Corp.

For the last 10 years, this Kelowna company has been creating aviation products and software technologies that are likely being used in an airplane you’ve flown on, Mallory said. More than 90 people are working in a 32,000 square foot facility in the Okanagan Valley, according to the company's website.

D Dutchman Dairy

D Dutchmen Dairy is a popular tourist stop in Sicamous but also sells its wares at Save-On-Foods locations. Established in 1978 by Chris and Nellie Dewitt, the dairy farm remains in the Sicamous family, according to the company’s website.

Las Mexicanas

These delicious Mexican style tortillas, spices and sauces come right from a Lake Country kitchen. They can be purchased at  Save-On-Foods, IGA, Urban Fare, Lake View Market, Peter's your Independent Store, Farmer's Fruit and Produce and Simply Delicious.

International Bar Coding

What makes IBC, International Bar Coding, located in Penticton, unique is its ability to create traceable barcodes so retailers can track all the details of a product, said Matt Pedersen, business development manager with IBC, in a previous interview with iNFOnews.

The idea was launched inside president and founder Chris Pedersen’s basement in 1993 and has developed into a company that has barcodes and labels on products around the world.
