Kelowna looking $9 million in grants for City Park

Kelowna could be looking for grant money to help restore City Park promenade.

KELOWNA - City council will be asked Monday to consider applying to the federal and provincial governments for grants that would put more than $11 million into upgrades to its prime waterfront park.

A report drafted by Parks and Buildings planning manager Robert Parlane and going before council on Monday, Dec. 3, says City Park best fits the criteria of the infrastructure program and city goals, ahead of other major projects such as the Glenmore and Mission recreation parks.

Proposed works include restoration of parts of the promenade, repairs to the seawall, shoreline restoration, creation of a new boardwalk along Cold Sands Beach, construction of a large children’s playground, reducing vehicular access, building a pedestrian loop trail and, in consultation with Westbank First Nations, a public art installation, the report says.

The Community, Culture and Recreation program was announced by the senior governments on Sept. 12. Under the program, the federal government contributes up to 40 per cent and the province up to 33 per cent.

The application will be for $9 million in senior government grants with the city contributing another $2.43 million.
