Taking its cue from the country's chief public health officer, Costco Canada is now asking that its customers wear a mask or face covering while shopping in their warehouses.
"To protect our members and employees, it is recommended that all Costco members and guests wear a mask or face covering that covers the mouth and nose, at all times while on Costco premises," reads the statement issued today, May 21.
"This recommendation does not apply to children under the age of 2 or to individuals who are unable to wear a mask or face covering due to a medical condition. The use of a mask or face covering should not be seen as a substitute for social distancing. Please continue to observe rules regarding appropriate distancing while on Costco premises. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation."
In the U.S., face masks have been required at Costcos since the beginning of the month but Costco on this side of the border had said it would follow the direction of Canadian health officials.
That direction shifted this week when Dr. Theresa Tam said Canadians should wear a mask as an "added layer of protection" whenever physical distancing is not possible.
"For the spring and summer months, strict adherence to the public health basics of physical distancing, handwashing and cough etiquette must continue as the bare minimum," she said.
"In addition, where COVID-19 activity is occurring, use of non-medical masks or face coverings is recommended as an added layer of protection when physical distancing is difficult to maintain. And staying home when sick is a must, always and everywhere."
