A new middle school is on the way for Kelowna with funding approval from the provincial government.

The new Burtch Road Middle School is going to have 800 seats for students in Glenmore and it's expected to cost around $101 million, according to a press release from the Ministry of Infrastructure.

“As more families choose Kelowna, we need to make sure students have the schools they need to succeed,” minister of infrastructure Bowinn Ma said in the release. “This new middle school is just one of many investments we’re making in the Okanagan to help meet growing demand and ensure students are supported for years to come.”

The plan is to have “culturally responsive spaces” that were designed with input from Indigenous communities. The spaces are meant to be part of reconciliation to give students a supportive learning environment.

This school is on top of the $400 million investment from the province to upgrade Kelowna schools and add new seats.

Upgrades are coming for Chief Tomat Elementary School, Dr. Knox Middle School, George Pringle Secondary School, Hudson Road Elementary School, North Glenmore Elementary School and Webber Road Elementary School.

“We welcome this provincial investment in our students and growing community,” chair of Central Okanagan Public Schools’ (SD23) Board of Education Julia Fraser said in the release. “A new middle school in the heart of Kelowna will ease pressure on other schools and offer myriad community connections for our students and families.”
