The Kelowna Fire Department responded to a fire in a high rise apartment this morning.

The call came in at 1:30 a.m. April 8, according to a release from the fire department.

While en route the fire was confirmed to be on the 15th floor and smoke was in the hallway.

When crews arrived at the 15th floor they discovered a fire in a bedroom of an apartment. It was knocked down quickly.

The fire was contained to the room and there was smoke damage in the apartment.

The sprinkler system managed to contain the fire but caused water damage on multiple floors. When the fire was confirmed to be out crews minimized the amount of damage caused by water.

One resident burned their hands and had to get taken to hospital by B.C. Ambulance Services. That was the only injury reported.

The cause of the fire has not been determined but does not appear to be suspicious.

RCMP officers helped evacuate residents on the lower floors, and also requested transit buses to keep the evacuated residents warm.

The Kelowna Fire Department’s response included three engines, a rescue truck, a ladder truck, a command vehicle and 15 fire personnel. Then fourth engine with four fire personnel arrived within 15 minutes.
