A detached garage in Kelowna was lost to a fire last night.

Members of the Kelowna Fire Department were called to the 3800 block of Water Road around 9 p.m. last night, May 13, according to a media release from the fire department.

A 30’ by 30’ garage was fully involved when the first crew arrived, and a large pine tree was also on fire.

“Crews deployed a hose line and started suppressing the fire, additional crews arrived and assisted,” the release says. “There were no hydrants in close proximity so a water tender was utilized for a water source.”

Damage was reported as extensive. The garage, as well as the contents, were a total loss.

The cause of the fire was deemed accidental.

The response included 14 personnel, three engines, a water tender, rescue truck, a command unit and the B.C. Ambulance Service.

“The Kelowna fire Department would like to remind residents to check their smoke detectors to make sure they are functioning properly.  Smoke detectors save lives.”
