Kelowna condo being evacuated in wake of 'hazardous materials' discovery

Playa del sol is being evacuated.

KELOWNA - Potentially hazardous materials were discovered in a condo at the Playa del Sol condo building in Kelowna's mission, prompting an evacuation of adjacent units in the building.

Kelowna RCMP are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of apparent hazardous materials located in association to a condominium located in the 600-block of Cook Road.

“Discoveries made on site this morning by the Kelowna Fire Department and police have prompted an evacuation of neighbouring units inside the resort to ensure public safety,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of the Kelowna RCMP, in a press release.

The general public is asked to avoid the area, to allow emergency crews space to work, residents impacted by the evacuation to leave the area and for their own personal safety.

Expect to see the RCMP and other emergency responders at the scene for a number of hours as they conduct their investigation.

They've yet to say what the hazardous materials are.
