Kelowna City Council meeting highlights

RCMP quarterly update

Council received an update on the activities of the RCMP for the previous quarter and the goals and outcomes of the 2016-2019 Crime Reduction Strategy. The increase in the overall crime rate for Kelowna, West Kelowna, Peachland and Lake Country is mainly due to preventable property crimes (i.e. bicycle theft and theft from vehicles). Education campaigns are underway to alert residents about these crimes of opportunity.

Additionally, RCMP are continuing to work on strategies with partnering agencies to reduce the overall calls for service, so that resources are available to participate in planned proactive policing initiatives.

Infill Challenge implementation

Council reviewed proposed changes to the Official Community Plan necessary to implement the outcomes of the Infill Challenge project, which seeks to develop new housing in established neighbourhoods. The proposed changes, forwarded to a public hearing on Nov. 29, will encourage and facilitate quality design and architecture while increasing housing density in our city.
