A Kelowna author continues to earn high praise for his novels.

Tyrell Johnson’s most recently published book The Lost Kings was named one of the best crime novels of the year by the New York Times last month.

“I was thrilled because the New York Times is such a huge platform, there’s always a boost in sales and recognition when a book gets a nod from them,” he said.

The Lost Kings is Johnson’s second novel, published in August 2022, with the first one The Wolves of Winter published in 2018.

Both books have earned outstanding recognition.

The Wolves of Winter became an Indi Next pick, a Loan Stars Canada pick, an Entertainment Weekly Must Have and an instant bestseller in Canada.

It's a post-apocalyptic novel about a young woman surviving in the Yukon wilderness with her family.

“They think they might be the last humans alive until a stranger arrives on their doorstep,” Johnson said.

He described The Lost Kings as a “character-driven, psychological thriller about a girl coming to grips with the tragedies of her past.”

“After her mother dies in a car accident, her father and brother both mysteriously go missing,” he said. “Years later, wrestling with her inner demons, a childhood sweetheart shows up at her door, claiming to know the location of her long-lost father.”

While Johnson said he tries to avoid searching out reader feedback online, he has received some positive comments personally about The Lost Kings.

“People have been very surprised by the twists and turns of the novel, and have found that it's not your typical thriller, either,” he said. “While it moves like a thriller, and is hopefully an exciting read, it's also very much a study of character and tragedy as well.”

The Kelowna author is working on his next novel.

“I’ve always loved writing and creating stories, and so I feel both very lucky and very privileged to be able to make a living from it.”

Both books are in Chapters/Indigo stores and some local bookstores, and are available in Ebook and audio format.
