The Ukrainian diaspora in Kamloops are preparing to mark the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of their homeland with a gathering this week.
It starts with an hour-long event at Thompson Rivers University, where people can share stories and "words of solidarity" with Ukraine and its people at 12 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, Oleksandr Kondrashov said.
The event will continue with a gathering in front of city hall, where people are encouraged to bring Ukrainian flags and where blue and yellow clothing. It will end with a vigil over Zoom at 7 p.m.

For the past year, small groups have gathered to wave their flags at city hall every Saturday.
Kondrashov said the group isn't organized, but they're people that are part of, or standing together with, the local Ukrainian community.
"We won't stop until victory," he said.
The war is constantly on his mind.
"It's extremely challenging. I'm waking up each day not knowing what will happen next," Kondrashov said.

Kondrashov came to Kamloops in 2016 and it took the ongoing war for him to find out just how many Ukrainians are in the Kamloops area.
"Thanks to the war, I've learned just how large it is," he said.

Feb. 24 will mark the first anniversary of the Russian invasion, which continues with thousands of casualties on either side, including Ukrainian civilians.
