Kamloops teen recognized for bravery after rescuing children

Const. Darwin Robins stood among his peers, accepting an award of service for his role in last year's hostage taking in Dufferin.

KAMLOOPS - A 14-year-old Kamloops girl was awarded a certificate of bravery yesterday for getting her two siblings and a friend out alive during a hostage taking and explosion in Dufferin last year.

Denann Crosby entered the home of Sherry Young and Dave Madore on Cannel Drive on May 17, 2012 strapped in explosives. He fired a shotgun and took Young hostage for seven hours before she was let go. The house ultimately blew-up with Crosby inside, perishing in the fire.

Shannon Young, Sherry's 14-year-old daughter, was recognized yesterday with a civilian award at the second annual RCMP awards ceremony in Kamloops for her bravery that day. She rescued her seven-year-old sibling and Madore's four-year-old child, ushering them into a bathroom before finding another sibling in the house and taking them all outside to safety.

Several police officers (see 'Team Award' below) were also recognized at the ceremony for their response to the situation.

"This co-ordinated response… demonstrated the highest level of skill," said Staff Sgt. Mike Savage who emceed the event.

Over 20 awards were handed out total to recognize dedication through various services
