A body was discovered near Rivers Trail on Tuesday after a fire near the Red Bridge in Kamloops.
Bylaw officers are blocking the public from getting too close to the scene between the Red Bridge and the train bridge today, Jan. 24, while police have the charred area covered with a tent, surrounded with yellow warning tape and lit with generator lights.
Police alerted the public hours after a worker cleaned up a burnt area of brush only to discover the body around 1:40 p.m. yesterday.
Kamloops RCMP asked the public to avoid the area late yesterday afternoon, describing the body as "suspicious debris."
Personnel at the scene today confirmed a body was found.
Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn hasn't said whether or not the investigation has been deemed a homicide.
"Police are awaiting attendance by the BC Coroners Service. Once that occurs, an update related to the investigation will be provided," she said in an emailed response earlier this morning and later confirmed the coroners service did attend.
A coroner "confirmed the remains to be human," read an RCMP news release today. Both the coroners service and a fire investigators are investigating along with RCMP. They're still working to identify the person.
RCMP haven't said whether the body itself was burned, and it's also not clear when the fire took place.
