UPDATE: Kamloops RCMP nab car thief after asking public for help

Original Publication Date June 28, 2021 - 11:35 AM

A man wanted after multiple incidents involving a stolen Honda Civic was arrested near Merritt today.

Kamloops RCMP were called on July 28 to investigate a suspicious vehicle and impaired driver, which collided with a parked vehicle, according to a Kamloops RCMP media release.

When police located the vehicle they found it to be stolen from outside Kamloops, but while attempting to stop the driver, he crashed into a light pole and fled an auto shop.

Police say he then stole another vehicle and hit a police officer in the process, but RCMP opted not to chase the suspect due to a risk to the public.

Around 11:30 a.m., the driver was spotted heading toward Merritt along Highway 5 and he was eventually stopped and taken into custody with the combined effort of RCMP Air Services, Merritt RCMP and Kamloops RCMP, along with their police dog service.

The suspect was already on parole, but he will now be facing multiple charges in relation to today's events, according to Kamloops RCMP.

RCMP issued media releases this morning asking the public to notify police if they spotted the silver Honda Civic he was driving, saying it would have been easily noticeable due to extensive front and rear end damage.

Kamloops RCMP is asking the public to submit dash cam footage of the incident to them.
