Kamloops RCMP officer faces dangerous driving charge

A Kamloops RCMP member has been charged with dangerous driving in connection to a chase that ended in a crash.

The B.C. Prosecution Service approved the charge today, June 17, in relation to the police pursuit which took place in Kamloops at around 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 8, 2018.

Const. Christopher Squire with the Kamloops RCMP was pursuing a suspect driving an allegedly stolen vehicle.

According to a release from the B.C. Independent Investigations Office, the officer’s unmarked car had crashed into the stolen pickup truck after the officers weren’t able to stop the suspect. The crash occurred at Grasslands Boulevard and Westsyde Road, and because the suspect suffered injuries in relation to the pursuit, the matter was then investigated by the Independent Investigations Office.

The Independent Investigations Office’s chief civilian director determined that three officers involved in the pursuit and arrest had committed offences. A report on the matter was then submitted to B.C. Prosecution Service which determined that only Squire would be charged.

Squire’s first appearance before the courts will take place on July 30 in Kamloops Provincial Court.
