Kamloops RCMP are cracking down on drivers for distracted driving and not wearing seatbelts this month and last Friday officers issued 156 violation tickets at roadside checks.

Of the 156 tickets handed out on Friday, March 6, at roadside checks on Columbia Street, Lansdowne Street and Tranquille Road, 88 tickets were for use of an electronic device and 50 were for failing to wear a seatbelt, according to an RCMP media release.

The remaining 18 violations were for numerous other traffic infractions including: littering from a motor vehicle, no driver’s licence and not having insurance.

“Fatal and serious injury motor vehicle collisions due to distracted driving are completely preventable,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said in the release. “The RCMP reminds drivers to keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.”

RCMP say officers will continue to focus on distracted driving and seatbelt use throughout the month of March.
