Kamloops RCMP are reminding drivers of the dangers of distracted driving and warning that officers will be focusing on the issue this month.
To get a head start on their enforcement efforts for distracted driving month, on Friday, Feb. 28, RCMP officers issued six distracted driving violation tickets within two hours of West Victoria Street and also in the same area issued 30 tickets for speeding in a construction zone.
RCMP remind drivers in a media release to keep cell phones away while driving, and note that an average of 76 people in the province die annually from distracted driving.
A distracted driving ticket will cost you $368 plus four driver penalty points for a total cost of $620. If you’re caught driving while distracted again within 12 month, the total amount of the penalties increases to more than $2,500.
