Kamloops rain barrel program flooded with requests

KAMLOOPS - Locals only have a couple days left to get rain barrels at a discounted rate through the city.

The barrel supplier has received orders for more than 900 barrels, sustainability educator Jaimi Garbutt says, with the last day to order this Friday, April 15. The barrels will be distributed during the Green Living Expo later this month.

There will likely be a bit of a wait for rain barrel pickup at the expo but Garbutt says they will have a lot of staff on hand to handle the distribution as efficiently as possible. The distribution team will include city staff who regularly work Saturdays, along with the city’s ECOSmart team.

She says she's still getting phone calls and emails about barrels daily more than a month after the program started. Garbutt considers the program a success but isn’t sure if there will be another similar rain barrel discount program soon.

“It depends on residents, if we get a lot of calls from people saying ‘I want another barrel,’ then maybe,” Garbutt says. “We’ll play it by ear.”

The Green Living Expo is a sustainability event organized by the city and taking place April 30 at the Sandman Centre. Garbutt says it will include sustainability speakers and hands on demonstration, including a bus to practice loading and off loading bicycles.
