Kamloops offering free transit for three upcoming events

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops has announced it will be offering free transit for three special events in the near future.

The City’s transit planner, Cheryl Fraser, says in a media release transit will be free for Canada Day on July 1 and Ribfest from Aug. 9 to 11.

As an added bonus, people commuting with their bicycles, or have their bike helmet, will be able to ride for free during Bike to Work Week which runs from May 27 to June 2.

“We recognize that the terrain in Kamloops can be challenging,” Fraser says in a release. “The Kamloops landscape shouldn’t be discouraging — have some fun, ride your bike to work, and allow the bus to take you back to your final destination at the end of your day. This is a great opportunity for residents who have been thinking about trying a bike/transit combo — it’s a complimentary ride home.”

With Canada Day and Ribfest both attracting large crowds, and keeping in mind the traffic disruptions created by the construction along Victoria Street West, the free transit will hopefully encourage people to leave their vehicles at home.

“Transit will be free to all users of the system in Kamloops during Canada Day and Ribfest, regardless of the route they are taking. We hope to encourage ridership, decrease road congestion and offer an alternative transportation choice,” Fraser says.
