The chief executive officer of ASK Wellness Society, which operates in Kamloops, Merritt and Penticton, received an award from the Governor General in Ottawa today.

Bob Hughes was recognized for supporting marginalized community members by building partnerships with government agencies, businesses and people with lived experience.

With a focus on housing and harm reduction, Hughes has led the non-profit over the past decade, helping clients secure homes, jobs and better health, according a release posted to the Governor General’s website.

“We are beyond excited here,” Andrina Tenisci with ASK Wellness told iNFOnews.ca. “It’s a very proud moment for him and humbling for us to have him leading the charge at ASK Wellness.”

The Meritorious Service Decorations (Civil Division) are part of the Canadian Honours System and are one of the highest honours a Canadian civilian can receive.

Hughes was originally awarded the recognition in Nov. 2020, but due to COVID restrictions the ceremony was put on hold.

“It’s incredible, he’s in the company of other recipients who have made big differences in their communities inside and outside of the country,” she said.

The Meritorious Service Decorations (Civil Division) were created by Queen Elizabeth II to recognize great Canadians for an exceptional deed they accomplished over a limited period of time that brings honour to our country,” reads a release from the Governor General's office. “They honour activities or deeds that are often innovative, set an example or model for others to follow, or improve the quality of life in a community.”

The awards were handed out today, March 21, by Governor General Mary Simon at the Rideau Hall in Ottawa.
