A Kamloops RCMP officer was assaulted by a youth at a North Shore bus exchange last night.

Multiple Mounties rushed to the bus exchange near Northhills Mall around 11:30 p.m. yesterday, June 22, where a group of 18 to 20 youths were intoxicated and there was already a report of another assault, according to an RCMP news release.

While an officer was trying to arrest one of the young men, he resisted and other youths tried to pull the officer away, according to police. Another young male "smashed" the officer's windshield with a skateboard, then hit the arresting Mountie in the head with it, RCMP said.

"Very fortunately, the officer is expected to recover,” Kamloops Supt. Jeff Pelley said in the release.

The assaulted officer was treated on scene by paramedics then taken to hospital for injuries that weren't life-threatening.

“This was an extremely alarming situation that could have most certainly had a very different outcome for the officer and youths involved." Supt. Pelley said. "I can’t stress enough the importance of cooperating with a police investigation and not interfering, which helps no one and in this case, led to an officer being assaulted and a youth now facing very serious charge recommendations."

Witnesses said around eight cruisers showed up at the scene and those backup officers eventually found the young man who hit the officer with a skateboard. He was taken to custody, then released to a guardian with conditions and a court date, RCMP said. The first youth was taken home to his guardian without conditions.

Both investigations are still ongoing and neither youth has been charged.
