Kamloops lowest temperature today broke airport's record, but not all-time daily record

KAMLOOPS — If you ask Environment Canada meteorologist, Trevor Smith, if today is the coldest Feb. 10 in Kamloops' recorded history he would say it "depends on your perspective."

The low in Kamloops this morning hit - 20.6 C according to the Kamloops Airport, which has been keeping track of local temperatures since 1951. According to these records today's low beat out the previous Feb. 10 record set in 1985 at -17.5 C.

Smith says earlier records show Feb. 10, 1939 still holds the daily record low at -26.7 C, and that's only for this date.

"It’s still a good cold air outbreak that we’ve been in now for about a week, so it’s significant," Smith explains in a phone interview. "It’s obviously well below normal, but yeah if you go back even further in time it’s not quite a daily record."

The coldest day in the month of February was on Feb. 2, 1957, Smith says, when it was -28.3 C.

He doesn't expect the cold weather to let up within the next week, and anticipates that February is probably going to be a "well-below average month."

"[Normally] we should have highs of 3 C and lows of -5 C," Smith says. "So our daytime highs will just be around where the daily lows should be for this time of year."
