KAMLOOPS - The unemployment rate in Kamloops is trending downwards, bucking the upward trend provincially and nationally.

In June, the unemployment rate in Kamloops was 5.8 per cent, which translates to 4,300 people out of work and 69,700 people employed, according to data from the most recent Labour Force survey published July 6.

The city's unemployment rate in June 2017 was 8.8 per cent, Statistics Canada analyst Vincent Hardy says.

"It's good to look at a few trends for several months because it gives us greater confidence about where things are going," Hardy says.

He says the unemployment rate in the city has been trending downwards since March.

The provincial unemployment rate increased to 5.2 per cent in June, compared to 4.8 per cent in May.

Nationally, the economy added 31,800 positions last month and the unemployment rate rose to six per cent, from 5.8 per cent in May.

The unemployment rate for Kamloops decreased from March to May.
