Kamloops grocer sweetens Overlanders Day cancellation

KAMLOOPS - A Kamloops grocer who was supplying pies for a pie-eating contest has donated all the pastries to the food bank instead of selling them or throwing them out.

Many were disappointed that Overlanders day was cancelled due to poor air quality in Kamloops yesterday, Aug. 19. Then at about 9 a.m. the Kamloops North Shore Business Improvement Association posted a shout out on their Facebook page to Jason Cain owner of Cain’s Your Independent Grocer.

Cain estimates he had baked about 50 pies for the pie eating contest. Then when Overlanders Day was cancelled he decided to donate them to Kamloops Food Bank which picked them up this morning, Aug. 20.

“We had already factored in the donation cost,” he said. “So we figured they would go to a good cause.”

Cain’s Grocer regularly makes donations to the food bank as part of the foodSHARE program, however after this, some people will get to enjoy some cherry or apple pies.

“With everything going on around us, the smoke and fires, turning a bit of a negative into a positive was kind of a good feeling,” Cain said.
